Good News & Bad News

Bad News First
Due to economic reasons, the National Student Conference will not be taking place this year.

Good News: The Show Must Go On
We are still organizing a National Student Show to recognize and award the best student work the nation has to show off. Winning entries will be posted online and published in a first-ever annual that will go to the top creative shops in the country.

More Good News
The original submission deadline has been moved back two months. The deadline is now April 16th, so you have more time this semester to perfect your work. So students, get your best work together, and mail in your entries for your chance at cash prizes and recognition nationwide.

More information about the show, and Entry forms to download will be posted on the official website by February.

Look Good. Talk Good: A Portfolio & Interview Workshop Series Presented by Good For Grasshopper & We Are 1976

Most schools teach you about how to kern and rag. Most schools teach you about color and form. But not all of them teach you the part that can be the gateway between being a student designer and a real world designer. This February through April, Good For Grasshopper in partnership with We Are 1976 will be offering a series of workshops to help you make that transition—from polishing your portfolio presentation to getting an interview and acing it. At the end of the series will be a mock interview speed-dating session so you can practice what you’ve learned with some local industry leaders.

The best part is these workshops are FREE to attend! But space is limited so click here to register now.

Books Books Books

If anyone can judge a book by its cover, it’s a designer. Whether you’re an avid reader or not, you’ll enjoy these three blogs, each of which approaches the subject of book cover design in unique and insightful ways.

1) Shelved Books: “A blog dedicated to the cover that never happened.”

ShelvedBooks

The blog of designer Kimberly Glyder chronicles the journey of design from first comp to completion, with all of the revisions in-between.

What makes this blog special? Kimberly does a great job of walking through the various stages of each cover, her thoughts behind her design decisions, the publisher feedback and her thoughts on the final piece compared to earlier renditions of the design. The blog was also recently listed as one of HOW Magazine’s Top Ten Sites.

2) Book By Its Cover

ByitsCover

Edited by illustrator and pattern designer Julia Rothman, this collection of covers is like walking through the bookstore without having to look at all of those John Grisham best sellers. A veritable visual feast.

What makes this blog special? The books featured are mostly visual works, and are broken up into these categories: childrens, comics, design, fine art, handmade. The blog also features artists’ sketchbooks and interviews.

3) Covers

BookCovers

Curated by Fwis, a design firm based out of Brooklyn, NY, this may be the most comprehensive of book cover blogs I’ve found.

What makes this blog special? Covers may be user submitted, so there is a wide range of style and subject matter. Covers can be organized by designer, publisher and author. Critical comments are encouraged and provide a subjective review of each cover, and you can join in on the conversation.

Do you know of any other book cover blogs or sites? We’d love for you to share them!
