Meet Judge – Jeff Barfoot

Jeff holds degrees in graphic design, illustration, and marine biology from the University of Arizona. His design and illustration work has been recognized by most major design competitions and publications, including Communication Arts, the Art Directors Club of New York, Graphis, Print magazine, the AR100 (for annual report design), the Dallas Society of Visual Communications (DSVC), the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the One Show, and the American Advertising Federation.

Jeff is a past president of the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, and served on its board of directors for eight years. He is past editor-in-chief of Rough magazine, the monthly publication of the DSVC. Jeff has also served on the board of directors of the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the AIGA. He has been asked to show his work and address several professional groups and university programs, and is honored to have judged several design competitions.

He is extremely proud to be the cofounder of the National Student Show & Conference, hosted by the DSVC. Each year, the nation’s largest creative competition and conference attracts over 700 students and educators from across the United States and doles out over $20,000 in scholarships and show prizes.

Over the course of his career, he has done identity, retail branding, and investor communications projects for 7-Eleven, the American Heart Association, Blockbuster, the Dallas Museum of Art, Fossil, Hallmark, Hasbro, IBM, KEXP Seattle, Neenah Paper, Neiman Marcus, Nickelodeon, Pepsi, Sappi Fine Paper, Sony, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, and Yum! Brands.

In the evening, Jeff heads out to his backyard studio where he and his wife, Shay, run Bee Things, designing and screen-printing limited-edition art prints, apparel, and paper products for the home. Jeff has two moppy-haired sons and two miniature wiener dogs, all four of which eat his food.

And if you haven’t guessed by now, his marine biology degree is not very useful to him at this time.

Meet Judge- Chuck Schiller

Chuck was born. Chuck went into advertising. Everything in between is really pretty insignificant. At least for now, anyway. Since getting into advertising in 1984, Chuck has been running creative departments of large and small agencies, including a stint overseas running an agency in Warsaw, Poland. Chuck has been at The Richards Group for six years working on a range of brands, namely Corona, The Home Depot, Nokia, Red Lobster, Hyundai, Comcast, Coldwell Banker and, crossing the oceans again, UTStarcom, a Chinese communications and technology company. Chuck switched from art direction to writing years ago because of his love of big words. Currently, Chuck is knee-deep in melted butter helping Red Lobster regain their rightful place as America’s favorite seafood restaurant and building the UTStarcom brand into a global household name.

His work has been featured in Communication Arts, The One Show, Graphis, Print, the ANDYs, the ADDYs, and The London International and New York Festivals. And twice the United Nations has honored Chuck with awards for outstanding advertising. In his spare time, he plays guitar with his two kids and teaches them the other essentials of living a successful life here on earth. Along with his wife, Debbie, and the two boys, Chuck scuba dives, skis, and loves to travel. He is an avid writer but maintains his formal fine art training by doing large oil paintings of people with big noses. His dogs, Hercules and Fritz, both sleep at the foot of Chuck’s bed.

Chuck wishes he could still dunk. And he is no longer a member of the illuminati.
